Speech and language therapy (children and young people)

All patients referred to the speech and language therapy service will be prioritised according to clinical need, as determined by the speech and language therapist (SLT)

Children, teenagers and young adults: Ext. 4100 (Tuesday-Thursday, 9am-5pm)

The speech and language therapy department will cover urgent referrals (tel 020 8661 3038) between 8:30-17:00 Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays).

Referral guidelines

SLT interventions can help in the following areas:

  • Communication and language difficulties
  • Developmental delay
  • Social communication
  • Feeding difficulties
  • Swallowing problems
  • Voice concerns
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Oro-motor difficulties
  • Advice on Videofluoroscopy Assessment

Please feel free to discuss referrals with the SLT team.


Patients will be seen by the SLTs at The Royal Marsden during treatment for their cancer. The need for ongoing SLT will be determined by the SLT. This may include:

  • Outpatient SLT at The Royal Marsden
  • Referral to a local community team
  • Referral to a local SLT outpatient service
