The Man Van is a mobile health clinic that offers free health checks for men in a private and relaxed environment. It aims to identify and address undiagnosed health conditions and facilitate earlier diagnosis of urological cancers.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. 1 in 6 men in the UK will get prostate cancer and over 50,000 men are diagnosed every year. Black men are more at risk of getting prostate cancer than other men and have a 1 in 4 chance of getting the disease.
Diagnosing prostate cancer early and maintaining a healthy lifestyle result in better outcomes. Around 20% of prostate cancer is first diagnosed via A&E - the aim of the Man Van is to target groups at high risk of delayed diagnosis. We will also be carrying out a broader health check for other potentially serious conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
The Man Van is a mobile health clinic focusing on men’s health and carries out free health checks on men in a private and relaxed environment. This service is available free of charge and is completely optional.
The programme, developed by The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, RM Partners West London Cancer Alliance, and The Institute of Cancer Research, London, supported by The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, will focus on men of working age who often have worse prostate cancer outcomes than older men, particularly those in manual jobs who often struggle to access healthcare. Black men, who have roughly double the risk of developing prostate cancer and an increased risk of death once diagnosed, are also being encouraged to get checked.
What happens at a Man Van health check?
The health check consultation should take around 30-40 minutes in a relaxed and private environment in the van. You will be asked a few questions about your health and lifestyle, as well as a few questions about any medical history that might be relevant. The nurse will also carry out some assessments, such as height and weight measurements, blood pressure and ask for a sample of your urine. Once you’ve completed the health check, the nurse will talk you through the results and give you a copy of the results. For some men, the results may show that you need a follow up appointment with your GP or the hospital for more tests. This will be explained to you with the nurse and an appointment will be made for you.
