The Royal Marsden's two Rapid Diagnostic and Assessment Centres (RDAC) in Chelsea and Sutton ensure that patients with suspected cancer receive the best diagnostic tests and care without delay.

The RDAC in Chelsea is an outpatient facility run by dedicated staff, providing the one-stop assessment clinics that have become standard practice in breast, urological and sarcoma oncology.

With eight clinic rooms on the ground floor and a diagnostic suite with equipment for ultrasound, mammography, cystoscopy, colposcopy and minor operations on the first floor, the Chelsea RDAC is one of the most advanced centres of its kind in the UK.

It also offers family history genetic screening, and plans to roll out rapid diagnostics clinics for other areas such as gynaecology. The facility now gives more private patients access to the world-leading diagnostic facilities and expertise at The Royal Marsden through extra private clinics between 8am-6pm, five days a week.

To help meet increased demand, the RDAC has been refurbished to provide a more comfortable and spacious environment in which patients can wait for their appointment.

Patients are always seen within two weeks of referral to the RDAC. Once here, they will be seen by the same consultant who will care for them from diagnosis to the day they are discharged from The Royal Marsden after treatment.

A team effort

All clinics are run by our multidisciplinary team, which includes consultant surgeons and oncologists, radiologists, radiographers, specialist nurses, histopathologists and clerical staff.

Our staff can perform a range of tests, such as diagnostic imaging, tissue sampling and biopsies. Most patients get their results or a form of diagnosis on the same day as their visit.

If the patient is diagnosed with cancer, staff will organise their next appointments, scans, treatments and procedures with the consultant and other members of the Private Care team. This ensures an efficient and smooth patient pathway.

“Our dedicated private diagnostic clinic allows the patient to meet their consultant at their first appointment,” says Lisa Page, Private Care Service Manager.

“This enables the development of the strong patient-clinician relationship we pride ourselves on at The Royal Marsden. Seeing someone they trust and know from the moment they first come to the hospital gives the patient peace of mind.

“The extra capacity means we can offer additional private clinics, allowing more people to access the state-of-the-art facilities and expert care we offer at The Royal Marsden.”
