Hospitals join forces to boost lung service
Dr Sanjay Popat and Dr Fiona McDonald of The Royal Marsden
Lung cancer patients are seen in clinic by a multidisciplinary team of specialists from both hospitals, who can then rapidly decide on the best treatment option for them.
Patients who require lung surgery are treated at Royal Brompton, while those receiving radiotherapy or chemotherapy, or who are on drug trials, are treated at The Royal Marsden.
The service was set up by The Royal Marsden's Dr Sanjay Popat, Consultant Medical Oncologist, and Dr Fiona McDonald, Consultant Clinical Oncologist, together with Royal Brompton's Dr Pallav Shah, Consultant Physician, and Mr Simon Jordan, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon.
"Lung cancer patients often have complex needs, so having specialists all under one roof is a more efficient way of diagnosing and treating patients," said Dr Popat.
"It has enabled us to speed up the service, minimise delays and provide the best possible care for our patients. This is yet another great example of teamwork between our two hospitals for patients with lung cancer."
The joint clinic is held on Tuesdays in The Royal Marsden's Rapid Diagnostic and Assessment Centre in Chelsea.
