Smithers Ward is a 23-bed general oncology ward for women with breast, gynaecological, gastrointestinal, head and neck, lung, and thyroid cancers.
Our patients receive surgery, chemotherapy, systemic radiation treatments and symptom control.
We have four single rooms, three single rooms for systemic radiation treatments and four bays of four beds each.
In addition, we have four day case beds for surgery and medical treatment such as blood transfusions and chemotherapy.
On Smithers Ward we believe that holistic, patient-centred care is at the heart of all we try to achieve. We deliver compassionate care and know that in order to do so we need to care and support each other. Patients often say how much they have enjoyed their stay on Smithers Ward and are very surprised by this. This is what we aim to achieve and what we are most proud of.

Smithers Ward staff
Smithers Ward has a large mix of staff with many years of experience in cancer care. We usually have six trained nurses on a day shift and two at night with additional support from healthcare assistants. During working hours there is also a housekeeper and ward clerk.
Shift handover happens between 8am to 8.30am and 8pm to 8.30pm. Each handover takes place at the patient’s bedside which helps make the patient feel included in the planning of their care.
Many different consultants come to Smithers Ward and they carry out ward rounds at different times. If you would like a friend or family member with you to discuss your care with your medical or surgical team please talk to a member of the nursing staff.
The matron for Smithers Ward is Ann Duncan and the sister is Bridget Cooley.
