The Mobile Chemotherapy Unit (MCU) reduces the need for patients to travel for appointments while ensuring they continue to receive expert care and treatment from our staff.
The MCU operates within the community in Sutton three days a week, between 9:30-4.00pm. When not in use in the community, the MCU will be available at The Royal Marsden's Sutton site for use by the Medical Day Unit (MDU).
Eligibility for treatment on the MCU
You can discuss whether you are suitable for treatment on the MCU at your outpatient appointment with your doctor.
Difference in treatment between the Medical Day Unit and Mobile Chemotherapy Unit
You will always receive your first two doses of treatment on the MDU in Sutton. This is to ensure that we can address any side effects of treatment at the beginning of your treatment.
You will have blood tests and pre-treatment assessments at the MDU as normal, but you will receive your chemotherapy in the MCU. The nurses on the MCU are the same staff as in the MDU and treatment is delivered in the same way as it it is in the hospital. Due to limited space, friends and family will not be able to stay with you on the unit during your treatment.
If you would like further information about the MCU or have any questions about being treated on the unit please contact the Medical Day Unit on 020 8642 6011 ext. 3174/1195.
On the day of your treatment, if you are feel unwell and have a temperature above 37.5C, you must contact The Royal Marsden Macmillan Hotline on 020 8915 6899 (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week).
The MCU has been made possible by Hope for Tomorrow, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
