Professor Wim Oyen is Consultant in Nuclear Medicine and Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine and Professor of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and Team Leader in Translational Molecular Imaging at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR).
He leads a programme to translate new radiopharmaceuticals developed at the ICR into clinical studies at The Royal Marsden and to introduce novel molecular imaging approaches for staging, treatment selection and monitoring of treatment response, as a means of optimising therapy for the individual cancer patient.
Professor Oyen graduated from medical school at the Radboud University in Nijmegen in 1988. His research fellowship on molecular imaging of infectious diseases at the Department of Nuclear Medicine of the Radboud University Medical Centre (RUMC) was awarded with a PhD in 1992. He combined his PhD project with training in nuclear medicine and was registered as a nuclear medicine physician in 1994. After his registration he was appointed as a Consultant in Nuclear Medicine at the department where he trained. In 2001, he was appointed as Professor of Experimental Nuclear Medicine, and in 2007 as Professor of Nuclear Medicine and Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, at the RUMC. In September 2015, Professor Oyen moved to London to join the ICR and The Royal Marsden.
During his appointment in Nijmegen, he was responsible for the largest training programme of residents in nuclear medicine in the Netherlands and was the supervisor of more than 40 successfully completed PhD projects. He is author on more than 600 articles in scientific journals, including Lancet Oncology, Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology and The Journal of Clinical Oncology, and more than 100 papers in The Journal of Nuclear Medicine. The scientific work of his group was awarded with The Marie Curie Award of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine in 1994 and in 2011. He was awarded with honorary membership of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology in 2009.
At the RUMC, Professor Oyen was a Member of the Board of the Medical Staff and he served as the Research Director of the Radboud Research Institute of Oncology. During his time as Vice-President of the Dutch Society of Nuclear Medicine, he was one of the driving forces behind the joint training programme in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine in the Netherlands, which became effective in the summer of 2015. He was the Chair of the Oncology Committee of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine, where he was responsible for organising numerous scientific and educational seminars at congresses of clinical societies.
He was co-founder of The Dutch Imaging Hub, a collaboration of nuclear medicine and oncology specialists from the University Medical Centres in Nijmegen, Amsterdam and Groningen. Currently, he sits on the Board of the European Cancer Organisation (ECCO) and the Board of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine as the EANM Congress Chair 2014-2016. He is actively involved in the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). He serves as Associate Editor of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine and is a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and other international imaging journals.
