Biography

Prof Julia Riley is a Consultant in Palliative Medicine at The Royal Marsden and the Royal Brompton Hospital, Visiting Professor of Palliative Medicine & End of Life Care, Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College, London. She is also:

  • Member of the London Cancer Alliance Palliative Care Pathway Group
  • Editor of the European Journal of Palliative Care (the journal of the European Association for Palliative Care).
  • Trustee of St John & Elizabeth’s Hospital and Hospice

Professor Riley has two main research interests. The first is in the inter-individual variation in patients’ response to opioids. The second is the development of models of end-of-life care that involve a seamless transition between the acute and the community sector, improve quality of life, decrease the number of unnecessary hospital admissions and increase the number of patients being cared for and dying in their preferred place.

Prof Riley is also committed to the development of individualised urgent care plans for people with chronic health care conditions and/or life-limiting illnesses in order that they might express their wishes and preferences for how and where they are treated and cared for.
