Professor Cyril Fisher is an internationally renowned surgical pathologist who specialises in the diagnosis of soft-tissue tumours, including the application and evaluation of the most advanced diagnostic techniques.
Professor Fisher graduated in medicine from Oxford University and trained in pathology at University College Hospital Medical School, London. He has held senior academic appointments in the USA and the UK, and is currently Professor of Tumour Pathology at The Institute of Cancer Research and Consultant Histopathologist at The Royal Marsden.
Professor Fisher’s research in the field of soft tissue sarcomas has included clinicopathological, immunohistologic, and molecular genetic studies, as well as descriptions of new entities. He has authored or co-authored more than 500 scientific publications, including over 400 peer-reviewed articles (link to Sarcoma Unit pathology publications page), is the author of three textbooks on the pathology of soft tissue tumours, and has contributed chapters to 21 other books.
He has served as elected President of the International Society of Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology and as a member of the consensus group of the WHO classification of Bone and Soft Tissue tumours. He has given more than 200 invited lectures in 22 countries, is an editor of Sarcoma and a member of several other editorial boards including the American Journal of Surgical Pathology.
Professor Fisher deals with around 2,000 specimens of soft-tissue tumours and related conditions a year, and receives cases for second opinion from pathologists throughout the UK and worldwide.
