Mr Khan read medicine at Brasenose College, Oxford before completing his specialist training in Plastic surgery in the London Deanery. During this time, he was awarded a Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship to pursue a PhD at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) investigating virally-delivered gene therapies as targeted agents to prevent post-radiotherapy fibrosis. He was subsequently awarded an NIHR Academic Clinical Lectureship in Plastic surgery at the ICR to study breast implant capsule biology. His research has gained wide recognition including awards from The Royal College of Surgeons, the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (BAPRAS), the European Association of Plastic Surgery (EURAPS) and invited lectureships at international conferences.
Following award of his CCT, he undertook a 1-year fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery for cancer at the Sidney-Kimmel Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital, USA. During this time, he gained experience in autologous breast reconstruction (DIEP, TMG), sarcoma reconstruction and the surgical management of lymphoedema with lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) and vascularised lymph node transfer (VLNT) techniques. He is a core member of the oncoplastic breast MDT and is a member of BAPRAS.
He remains engaged in translational and clinical research related to cancer survivorship at the Royal Marsden and ICR. His research interests focus on breast implant capsule biology (including capsular contracture and breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)), post-radiotherapy fibrosis and the clinical evaluation of microsurgical interventions for lymphoedema. He is a member of the Committee for Clinical Research at The Royal Marsden and ICR, sits on trial steering committees for national trials in Plastic surgery and holds leadership positions in a range of clinical trials in Plastic surgery. He has a track record of PhD supervision at the ICR that have yielded high-impact peer-reviewed publications, grant funding and oral presentations at international meetings.
Mr Khan has both an NHS and private practice at The Royal Marsden.
