Department of Diagnostic Radiology

This department incorporates all aspects of oncological imaging and includes CT, MRI, breast and General Ultrasound, General and Interventional Radiology and Mammography.

The Radiology department runs across all our hospital sites in Chelsea, Sutton and our latest site, Cavendish Square, which opened in May 2021. We develop advanced imaging pathways which follow all our patients through diagnosis, staging, treatment and on-going follow up.

We have strong strategic links with The Institute of Cancer Research and Biomedical Research Centre, and a Clinical Research Facility (CRF) and AI Imaging grant, which allow us to contribute to and support a large imaging research portfolio.

We work within a quality management system and have been awarded full Quality Standards for Imaging accreditation in March 2018 and on-going. We support radiology staff developing specialist skills for role extension and development to help support our diagnostic services. Our radiologists have pioneered protocol development in whole body diffusion weighted MRI Imaging and The Royal Marsden is one of the few centres that performs and interprets this imaging technique.

The Diagnostic Imaging Departments work to ensure the service:

  • Provides safe and timely imaging procedures to patients.
  • Provides patients, their relatives and carers with a prompt and courteous service with adequate support and information.
  • Encourages feedback from all service users and monitors all aspects of the service provided.
  • Ensures the highest quality images are produced by optimising existing methods and developing new innovative techniques through audit and research.
  • Recruit staff with up to date experience in the disciplines in which the Trust practises and provide training to health care professionals as local courses and as part of national curricula.
  • Makes efficient use of resources.

Our Services

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

We have eight state-of-the-art MRI scanners, four 1.5T MRI scanners and four 3T MRI scanners. We provide advanced clinical and research scanning, specialising in functional and whole body imaging in the assessment of lesion biology and response.

Computerised tomography (CT)

We have five state-of-the-art Siemens diagnostic CT scanners across both our sites, offering dual-source energy and interventional CT capabilities which allow us to create detailed cross-sectional images to assist with diagnosis, staging and response during and post treatment.

Interventional radiography (IR) (Chelsea only)

Our IR service allows us to carry out complex procedures like angioplasties, chemo-embolisation and lesion ablation, as well as simpler procedures such as the insertion of gastric and jejunal feeding tubes. The service is consultant-led and is carried out by specialist interventional radiologists, IR radiographers and IR nurses. We also have a 24/7 emergency on call IR service.

We have Rapid Diagnostic and Assessment Centres at all sites with six state-of-the-art Hologic Tomosynthesis mammography units including biopsy and contrast enhanced spectral mammography capabilities. This ensures that patients at both our sites have access to premium quality mammography imaging.

The centres are used for one-stop symptomatic breast clinics, as well as for moderate family history patients and Open Access follow-up patients.

Our dedicated breast radiology team also perform interventional breast guided biopsies under mammographic, US and MRI guidance.

Ultrasound (US)

We have state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment at both our sites. Our US service offers both general and breast procedures including ultrasound-guided biopsies on a wide range of body parts, as an integral part of the patient treatment pathway.

We have state-of-the-art X-ray equipment at all our sites and Fluoroscopy and dental Imaging at our Sutton and Chelsea sites.
