Susanna trained at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London, qualifying in June 2000. After a period of time working on the South Coast she moved back to London train in a medical rotation at St Thomas’ Hospital, gaining her MRCP qualification. It was at this point she moved into Anaesthetics training initially at St Mary’s Hospital, and then on the Imperial Anaesthesia Training rotation, gaining FRCA qualification including the “gold medal” award from the Royal College of Anaesthetists for her primary exam performance.
In 2009 she took a period of time out of training to focus on her interest in patient safety, completing a higher degree, MD (Res), under the supervision of Prof Charles Vincent a world renowned clinical psychologist in the area of patient safety. The research particularly focussed on the importance of multidisciplinary teamworking skills in high pressure environments, such as operating theatres, and included the development of teamworking assessment tools, an area that continues to interest her.
Susanna completed her training in a perioperative medicine and anaesthesia fellowship at the Royal Marsden Hospital which gave her a good understanding to the unique challenges of anaesthetising patients with cancer for major surgery cases.
Since starting as a consultant she has taken on the role of coordinating all anaesthesia and critical care fellowships, and predominantly anaesthetises patients in the areas of paediatrics, sarcoma, and breast surgery.
