Dr Anna Kirby voted President-Elect of European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology

Dr Anna Kirby, BA (Hons) MB BChir MA MRCP FRCR MD(Res), a Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in the treatment of patients with breast cancer, was voted President-Elect of ESTRO in April 2020.

Dr Anna Kirby is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden and Institute of Cancer Research, London specialising in the treatment of patients with breast cancer, and leading research into novel breast radiotherapy techniques. We are delighted that Anna was voted President-Elect of the prestigious European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) in April 2020. ESTRO is a non-profit scientific organisation that fosters radiotherapy in all its aspects, including research, clinical oncology and related subjects, medical physics in the field of radiation oncology, radiation technology and radiobiology.

Dr Kirby will be ESTRO’s 23rd President since its foundation in 1981, the fourth female President and the fourth from the Royal Marsden, after Professors Mike Peckham in 1984, Ann Barrett in 1997 and Mike Brada in 2003. Dr Kirby has been involved with ESTRO since 2004 when she joined as a trainee oncologist. In 2015 she was invited to join the Scientific Advisory Committee for the ESTRO 35 Congress in Turin, and in 2017 the Editorial Board for ESTRO’s Journal of Clinical and Translational Oncology. In 2019, she was elected to the ESTRO Board, through which she has been developing a working understanding of the vision and mandate of the organisation.

Dr Kirby said 'There are significant challenges ahead in maintaining and developing cancer care, particularly in the aftermath of COVID-19 but, with the ongoing collaboration, innovation, communication and pragmatism that characterises ESTRO’s members, I have no doubt that ESTRO’s vision of optimal radiation oncology for all will be achievable.'

It is a huge honour to have been elected as ESTRO’s President and to have the opportunity to serve the European radiation oncology community at the highest level.
