Sign up to Safety

This patient safety campaign is part of a three-year national initiative to reduce incidents of avoidable harm by half in all aspects of NHS healthcare.

By committing to the safety pledges which underpin the initiative, Sign up to Safety has the ambition of saving around 6,000 lives as a result. These five pledges include:

  1. Putting safety first
  2. Continually learning
  3. Being honest
  4. Collaborating
  5. Being supportive

Avoidable harm can be reduced by listening to patients, carers and staff, learning from what they say when things go wrong, and taking action to improve the safety of patient care.

In signing up, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust commits to strengthening our patient safety by:

  • Describing the actions we will undertake in response to the five campaign pledges
  • Committing to turn these actions into a safety improvement plan which will show how our organisation intends to save lives and reduce harm for patients over the next three years
  • Identifying the patient safety improvement areas we will focus on within the safety plans
  • Engaging our local community, patients and staff to ensure that the focus of our plan reflects what is important to our community
  • Making our plan public and regularly updating our progress

Safety Improvement Plan

In order to realise our ambition to reduce avoidable harm to the patients in our care, The Safety Improvement Plan outlines three key quality and safety priorities for The Royal Marsden over the next three years. These priorities include:

  • Sepsis – increasing awareness, identification and treatment of sepsis and reducing death from it
  • Reducing harm from medication errors
  • Reducing harm from pressure ulcers
