Bryan Adams rocks by the river
24 May 2005
Chart topper Bryan Adams gave everyone a night to remember when he performed his greatest hits free of charge at a special charity concert in aid of The Royal Marsden Hospital.
Rock by the River, a glittering private concert and auction for 500 guests held in Billingsgate, proved to be the latest hit for the singer-songwriter, as the event raised more than £1.3million for the hospital's charity, The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign.
Capital Radio DJ Johnny Vaughan hosted the evening, which included a champagne reception, three-course dinner and 70-minute set by Bryan Adams, before Sotheby's Chairman Henry Wyndham began the fundraising auction.
Guests bid for an array of glittering prizes, among them a trip via private jet to the south of France for a three-day stay on a yacht for eight people, a meal for ten prepared and cooked at their home by chef Albert Roux, a week's holiday on Richard Branson's Necker Island and a behind-the-scenes tour of Arsenal Football Club.
Angela Roden, Fundraising Director, said: "It was a truly amazing night and I was immensely proud to be part of such an extraordinary evening. We have been staggered by everyone's generosity, which ensured that this was one of the biggest fundraising events held for the Royal Marsden in recent years.
"We'd like to thank everyone who made the evening such a success, in particular Catherine Armitage, Kate Sloane and members of their fundraising committee who organised the event."
At the end of the auction, guests were invited to give money towards the purchase of one of five £50,000 portable ultra sound machines which will be used for cancer diagnosis at the Royal Marsden.
"We raised enough money to get all five," said Angela. "In fact, two people put their hands up and said they wanted to buy one each. It was absolutely wonderful!"
The Cancer Campaign, which is funding a number a Royal Marsden projects including a new diagnostic centre, has now raised more than £25m towards its £30m target.
Added Angela: "The success of Rock by the River demonstrates just what we can achieve with the help and generosity of our supporters. We hope that everyone will continue to fundraise for the Royal Marsden to ensure we reach our £30 million goal by the end of the year."
