There is one group based at each hospital site: Friends of The Royal Marsden (registered charity no. 222613).
The work undertaken by the Friends is entirely voluntary and includes:
- Providing services which enhance the well-being of patients and staff
- Running refreshment bars and shops
- Providing voluntary non-medical assistance in various wards and departments
- Raising funds for the purchase of medical equipment and provision of amenities for the added comfort of the patients.
The work of the Friends is financed by membership subscriptions, donations and various fundraising activities. These activities are organised by both the Friends and by interested members of the public whose efforts reflect the affection and respect held for The Royal Marsden.
Located in the Outpatients Department on the first floor of Wallace Wing, open Monday to Friday from 10am-4pm. The canteen provides a selection of refreshments including hot and cold drinks, freshly made sandwiches, yoghurts, cakes and confectionery.
Located on the ground floor next to the main reception, open every weekday from 10.15am-4pm. The shop sells cards, stamps, magazines, confectionery, soft drinks, gifts and a selection of second-hand books. The shop trolley is taken around the wards from Monday to Friday.
The Friends care for patients’ flowers and arrange flowers within the hospital. We provide fresh flower displays each week for the hospital’s two main receptions.
We take a trolley around the wards from Monday to Friday selling games, playing cards, crossword and puzzle books, art materials, handicrafts and a selection of gift items.
All garden areas are maintained by one of our volunteers, with plants provided by the Friends.
Meet and greet
Volunteers welcome patients at reception and assist them in finding their destination within the hospital.
Books and magazines
Book sales are held every month in the hospital, and we are able to provide the latest magazines in waiting areas through the generosity of Condé Nast Publications.
