Pre-assessment

Prior to your operation you will be seen in the Pre-assessment Unit, otherwise known as the Transitional Care Unit.

The Pre-assessment Unit has revolutionised the care patients receive leading up to their operation as it provides a personal, effective and informative service that patients greatly appreciate. Having this Unit also means that some patients can be safely admitted on the same day as their surgery, fully prepared for the procedure they are about to undergo.

Health assessment

The Pre-assessment Unit is staffed by a fantastic, well-established team of highly experienced nurse practitioners supported by consultant anaesthetists.

Together, they assess your general health and ensure that you are well enough for surgery. At this stage, further investigations – depending on your health and planned surgery – can be organised.

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET)

You may be assessed in our new cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) facility. This is an extremely useful pre-operative investigation which aids both clinicians and patients to make the right decisions about a patient’s treatment.
