Treatment

The Lung Unit provides state-of-the-art treatment for all forms and stages of lung cancer and mesothelioma within a comprehensive clinical research programme.

The most advanced chemotherapy (oral and intravenous) and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) with mutation testing are offered. Novel agents, including antibodies and new molecules, are offered in trials.

The Royal Marsden has the most up-to-date radiotherapy facilities for treatment and research so that the correct dose of radiotherapy reaches the tumour.

Treatment at the Royal Marsden is tailored to the individual patient’s needs. This is done through regular multidisciplinary meetings in which thoracic surgeons, chest physicians, doctors and radiologists discuss individual patient’s progress.

Clinical trials

We continue to place a high priority on drug development and new treatment strategies, and are actively involved in national and international multi-centre trials to evaluate therapies.

We also have a developing laboratory programme looking at genetic signatures in the lung cancer diagnosis and treatment pathway.

A wide range of supportive therapies are being explored including acupuncture for breathlessness.
