Medical Day Unit

The Medical Day Unit (MDU) provides a facility for intravenous chemotherapy, supportive therapies, procedures and investigations to patients with a wide variety of cancers.

The Unit comprises two strands:

• the MDU where longer therapies are administered
• the IV Team which is for shorter treatments.

The Unit is used as an educational resource both within The Royal Marsden and with other healthcare providers.

The unit operates from 08:30 to 20:00, Monday to Friday.

Many different cancers are treated in the Unit, in particular gastrointestinal tumours. It is a busy unit and a working knowledge of different cancers and their treatments is quickly gained. The Unit offers a modern and pleasant environment for patients, and we are committed to providing high-quality nursing care.

Intravenous (IV) therapy and vascular access devices are our speciality. We provide a nurse-led PICC insertion service, as well as having expertise in the educational aspects of venepuncture and cannulation training.

Nursing on the Medical Day Unit

All staff have venepuncture and cannulation skills and we offer expertise in all aspects of IV therapy.

The service is led by a nurse consultant with a matron managing the service provision. The team works with other members of the multidisciplinary team in order to provide a comprehensive service to patients and their carers.

The nursing team aims to deliver an excellent service at all times. As such, we are looking for enthusiastic nurses who like working as part of a team and who have an interest in IV therapy delivery. We are motivated and constantly striving to make a positive impact upon our patients’ lives, and we would love to hear from you if you would like to be part of our team.

Venepuncture and cannulation training is provided for those who do not possess these skills.
