Biography
Professor Nazneen Rahman qualified in medicine from Oxford University in 1991, and undertook her general medical training in Oxford and London, and her specialist training in Cardiff. She completed a PhD in Molecular Genetics at The Institute of Cancer Research in 1999 under the supervision of Professor Michael Stratton. She completed her Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Clinical Genetics in 2001.
In her clinical role she is responsible for the cancer genetics service at The Royal Marsden, and she practises as a Consultant Clinical Geneticist at The Royal Marsden and St George’s Hospital.
In her research role she leads two research groups which aim to identify genes that predispose to breast and/or childhood cancers respectively.
- The Breast Cancer Genetics Team is studying families in which multiple people are affected with the disease to try to find genetic causes of breast cancer. The Team have recruited over 5,000 families from across the UK, and have identified multiple new genes and genetic variants that predispose to breast cancer in recent years.
- The Childhood Cancer Genetics Team is studying genetic conditions associated with childhood cancers. To date they have been successful in identifying several genes and genetic mechanisms that cause a variety of cancers in children as well as chromosomal defects which cause growth defects and childhood cancer.
Professor Rahman has a strong commitment to the translation of research findings into clinical practice. To this end she retains considerable clinical responsibilities, running regular genetic clinics in which she sees families with a potential genetic cause of the cancers. She also provides advice to clinicians from across the world about rare cancer genetic syndromes, and integrates the molecular and clinical data from her research to produce diagnostic and management guidance for rare cancer-associated conditions.
