Biography

Professor John Yarnold joined The Royal Marsden as Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in 1980, and has been Professor of Clinical Oncology since 2001.

His main area of expertise relates to the role of radiotherapy in women with early breast cancer. Research interests focus on the development of more effective and simpler dose schedules of breast radiotherapy and the evaluation of advanced physical technologies.

He is the leader of many national randomised clinical trials, including the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Standardisation of Radiotherapy (START) trials, the NCRI Intensity Modulated and Partial Breast Radiotherapy (IMPORT) trials, the National Cancer Research Network Prospective randomised clinical trial testing 5.7 Gy and 6.0 Gy fractions of whole breast radiotherapy (FAST) trial, and the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) FAST Forward trial. He is a Senior Investigator of the NIHR and a past Chairman of the NCRI Breast Clinical Studies Group.

His translational research interests relate to the molecular basis of sensitivity to radiotherapy, including fractionation sensitivity.
