Professor J Meirion Thomas

- Senior Surgeon
- Professor of Surgical Oncology
Biography
Professor J Meirion Thomas has been the Senior Surgeon at the Sarcoma Unit for more than 20 years and has a near-unparalleled experience in the treatment of soft-tissue sarcoma. He sat on the NICE Committee which formulated the guidance for the treatment of soft-tissue tumours and has published extensively on the subject.
In 2007 Professor Thomas was awarded a personal Chair as Professor of Surgical Oncology by Imperial College London and The Royal Marsden.
He has always emphasised the importance of function and preservation in the treatment of limb and limb girdle sarcoma, and in the context of multidisciplinary management. He has always stressed the technical difficulties and challenges associated with surgery for retroperitoneal sarcoma, and has always advocated that these rare tumours should be referred directly to specialist units and treated under the care of a team who are experienced with sarcomas at this site.
He has led a surgical service with an uncompromising insistence on efficiency and good outcomes.
