Biography

Dr John E Williams is a consultant anaesthetist, and is Head of Pain Services at The Royal Marsden.

He qualified in Medicine in 1985 from the London Hospital, and underwent subsequent training in London, Oxford and Baltimore, USA.

He leads The Royal Marsden’s acute and chronic pain control teams. These teams offer a full range of pain treatments, including analgesic medication and nerve blocks.

His main interest is the treatment of all types of cancer-related pain, including chronic pain after surgery, neuropathic pain and intractable pain.

He regularly conducts acute pain ward rounds and has two outpatient clinics a week. He treats all types of acute and chronic cancer-related pain problems.

He has published widely on cancer-related pain and is currently conducting a National Institute for Health Research project evaluating the effectiveness of screening for cancer pain in oncology outpatients.
