Biography

Mr Chris Ogden specialises in robotic surgical techniques to treat prostate and other cancers. He has trained and worked in the UK, the USA and France, completing his da Vinci Surgical System training in Paris.

He was appointed to his first Consultant Urologist post in 1995 at Northwick Park and St Mark’s Hospital where he became head of department before being appointed to Chelsea and Westminster and St Mary’s hospitals. There he was the clinical lead in surgery. He also facilitated the merger of the urology departments between Chelsea and Westminster and St Mary’s in November 2004.

He began robotic prostatectomy in 2004, and his team was the first to be recognised as being able to perform the procedure in the UK. He performed the first private radical robotic prostate operation in the UK in 2005. Since then has done around over 1,000 robotic operations at rates of up to eight robotic radical prostatectomies a week.

He leads the robotic programme at The Royal Marsden which has the largest case throughput for NHS and private patients in the UK. Last year he was the leading surgeon for the number of cases performed in the UK.

He has also been involved in the first treatments in the UK using high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to treat prostate cancer.

His research interests include identifying the re-expression of highly specific developmental genes involved in the early development of the embryo and the urogenital tract, and his group has found expression of PAX2 in prostate cancer and PAX5 in bladder cancer. He has also explored the possible link between human endogenous retrovirus encoded in the human genome and prostate cancer, and the role of dentritic cells in bladder cancer, in particular in their role in BCG therapy, with the aim of understanding the immunological response with the hope of developing more specific treatments.
