Biography

Dr Sanjay Popat is an Academic Consultant Medical Oncologist specialising in the treatment of patients with thoracic malignancies: lung cancer, mesothelioma and cancers of the thymus.

He is also a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Medical Oncology at Imperial College London. His research programme at the National Heart and Lung Institute is investigating the early molecular events that result in cancers developing, and how best to individualise patient treatments.

Dr Popat qualified from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in 1994, and completed general medical training at the Royal Brompton and the Hammersmith Hospitals, and specialist training at The Royal Marsden.

He was awarded a PhD in Molecular Genetics in 2002, and undertook a Clinician Scientist Fellowship from 2002–05. He now holds a Clinical Senior Lecturer Award.

He has published over 40 papers, and has been awarded three competitive research fellowships as well as national and international prizes for his research.
