Biography

Dr Estella Matutes graduated from Barcelona (Spain) and moved to London in 1979 where she was attached to the Hammersmith Hospital/Imperial College until 1988. She achieved a PhD from the London University in 1987. In 1988 she moved to The Royal Marsden and The Institute of Cancer Research, and at present is Reader in Haemato-oncology and Honorary Consultant Haematologist.

Her main research interests concern the biology and pathogenesis of the lymphoid neoplasms, which may help to understand the behaviour of these diseases as well as devise novel effective therapies in B-cell and T-cell malignancies.

Dr Matutes is an active member of a variety of national and international committees such as the WHO for the classification of acute leukaemias, European group for the immunological classification of leukaemias (EGIL), European bone marrow pathology, UK NEQAS, UK CLL forum, NCRI CLL trials, and The Royal Marsden clinical research committee, among others. She has more than 400 peer review publications and is fully involved as a teacher in European and UK tutorials, such as those of EHA/ESH, as well as in clinical trials at The Royal Marsden.
