Research and clinical trials

We have a very active sarcoma clinical trials unit which is involved in studies of both traditional chemotherapeutic strategies and novel ‘targeted’ agents for a wide variety of sarcomas, including gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) and a number of very rare diseases.

These trials include both in-house studies and large multicentre, multinational studies, several of which involve the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Soft Tissue and Bone Sarcoma Group.

Drug Development Unit

The Royal Marsden has the largest phase I oncology unit in Europe (our Drug Development Unit) which uniquely affords access to first in-man and early clinical trials for appropriate sarcoma patients. Both Professor Judson and Dr Scurr are directly linked to the Drug Development Unit.

Clinical database

We have also an active non-trial-related research programme. We have a large prospectively maintained clinical database of more than 7,500 patients which has contributed to the publication of more than 50 papers in the last five years. We have laboratory projects ongoing at The Institute of Cancer Research and are involved in a Europe-wide sarcoma research consortium, Conticanet.
