Learning and development

The Royal Marsden is committed to helping its staff develop in their current job and beyond. We provide an excellent range of development activities carefully selected to help staff at all levels develop new skills and successful working practices.
Learning, development and training advice and information
The Learning and Development department is able to help staff select the learning activity that best meets their needs. To achieve this, the department holds a comprehensive and up-to-date database of information on external training events, training materials and academic courses. Its staff can also advise on informal development methods such as work shadowing and independent learning.
Learning resource centres
We recognise that formal training programmes are not the only way of helping staff to develop. The Learning Resource Centres at Chelsea and Sutton are open learning facilities, providing opportunities for members of staff to learn at a pace which suits both them and the organisation.
From 'How to make computers work for you' to 'Managing budgets' as well as programmes for clinical and professional staff, the resource centres are for everyone. You can spend time on your own or with a colleague learning at your own pace, in private.
In-house training courses and events
We run excellent in-house training courses covering a wide variety of subjects. These are provided free for all staff. Courses are usually run in our modern and well-equipped facilities conveniently located at each hospital. We also support staff who wish to attend training courses run by other organisations.
Professional and formal management development
Clinical and technical staff are encouraged to build on existing skills and develop new ones.
We support staff who wish to develop their management skills in a number of ways. In addition to in-house courses, many staff are sponsored each year to attend university- and college-level programmes that may lead to formal qualifications such as degrees, diplomas, certificates and national vocational qualifications.
Developing and maintaining national and international links
The Royal Marsden is at the forefront of developments in cancer treatment and research. Staff regularly attend international conferences to share knowledge and new developments with colleagues. We support this important network by sponsoring staff to attend UK and overseas conferences, deliver presentations and present reports.
