Board and Management Executive

The Royal Marsden is managed by a Board of Directors made up of a Chairman, Chief Executive, four other Executive Directors and six Non-Executive Directors.

The day-to-day running of the hospital is carried out by the Management Executive made up of the five Executive Directors and the other members listed below.

Ian became Chairman in December 2010. He has extensive experience of operating at Board level in the commercial and financial sectors, and a proven record of leadership and achievement. He has been Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Molson Inc, North America’s oldest brewing company, and Managing Director and Co-Head of European Investment Banking at Credit Suisse Boston.

Ian has an interest in and knowledge of healthcare in the UK, US and Canada. He is an active campaigner and supporter for the welfare of cancer patients and is committed to ensuring The Royal Marsden continues to build on its reputation as a leader in cancer treatment, research and education.

Cally Palmer CBE

Cally Palmer became Chief Executive of The Royal Marsden in 1998. Previously Cally was Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Services at the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust. Cally is an MSc graduate in management from the London Business School, which she gained with distinction in 1995, and a member of the Institute of Health Services Management. Cally was awarded a CBE in 2006 for her contribution to the NHS.

David Probert

David Probert joined The Royal Marsden in October 2007 as its first Chief Operating Officer. Having completed his MBA with distinction in 1998, David joined the NHS Management Training Programme working in a mixture of community and acute settings including a period of time with the world renowned Institute of Healthcare Improvement in Boston, USA. Following that he joined Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust as a Deputy General Manager being promoted to General Manager in 2003. David joined The Royal Marsden having held the position of Divisional General Manager / Deputy Divisional Director at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust for almost four years.

Mr Alan Goldsman

Alan Goldsman was appointed in 2002 from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust where he was Deputy Director of Finance. Prior to this, Alan’s career includes four years in senior finance roles with the Health Service in New Zealand, and a further four years spent in the construction industry and in commercial banking. Alan is a qualified accountant and has an MSc in Health Management from City University.

Professor Martin Gore

Professor Martin Gore qualified in medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London in 1974. He trained in General Internal Medicine for five years and then was appointed as a Clinical Scientist at the Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research (1981–4). In 1984, he joined the training programme at The Royal Marsden and was appointed Consultant Cancer Physician to The Royal Marsden Hospital and Senior Lecturer at The Institute of Cancer Research in 1988. He is on the editorial board of several journals and has published over 300 articles and edited seven textbooks. He is currently Chairman of the Department of Health’s Gene Therapy Advisory Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Health and Safety Executive’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Genetically Modified Organisms.

Shelley Dolan

Shelley Dolan was appointed to the role of Chief Nurse at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in June 2007. She has worked clinically in the field of intensive care for 20 years, is a trained Intensive Care and Cancer Nurse who achieved her MSc in Cancer Care in 1996. She was promoted to Chief Nurse from her position as the first Nurse Consultant in Critical Care in the UK, a role she took up at The Royal Marsden in 2000. Prior to that, she was a Staff Nurse, Sister, Clinical Tutor and a Clinical Nurse Specialist. Shelley is currently completing her Doctorate in Nursing Science this year and is also Chair of the Royal College of Nursing Cancer Nursing Forum and the Local Research Ethics Committee. She is also Vice Chair of the Department of Health’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, and sits on the Board of the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care and on the Advisory Board of the European Oncology Nursing Society.

Gregory Andrews, FCA

Greg has spent most of his career in financial services. He was with Merrill Lynch for 20 years where he held a number of positions including that of Managing Director of Merrill Lynch International Bank Limited and as Chief Financial Officer of Merrill’s Global Private Banking Group in New York. From 2002 to 2006 he was Chief Operating Officer of New Philanthropy Capital, and now runs his own consulting business specialising in change management. He is a Governor of Epsom College and advisor to and Trustee of a number of charities. He is Chair of The Royal Marsden’s Audit and Finance Committee and the Investment Committee, and is a Trustee of The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign.

Professor Alan Ashworth, FRS

Professor Ashworth is Chief Executive of The Institute of Cancer Research, where he is responsible for a major programme of cancer research which extends from basic laboratory science through translational research to clinical implementation. He is a Professor of Molecular Biology and a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Colin Clark

Colin Clark has had over 25 years' experience in the investment management industry with Mercury Asset Management and Merrill Lynch Investment Managers. He is a Director of Aida Capital Ltd and a Non-Executive Director of Standard Life Investments and Alpha Strategic plc. He is a Governor of Francis Holland School and a founder shareholder in Notting Hill Preparatory School.

Sir John Craven

Sir John was Chairman of Fleming Family and Partners Limited, an independent, privately-owned investment house and was the Group Chief Executive and Chairman of Morgan Grenfell Group plc and a Member of the Board of Managing Directors of Deutsche Bank AG after that company’s acquisition of Morgan Grenfell. Sir John holds both British and Canadian nationality and was knighted for his services to banking and to the City.

Rev. Dame Sarah Mullally

Rev Dame Sarah Mullally was Chief Nursing Officer for England/Director of Patient Experience until September 2004 and Assistant Curate at Battersea Fields Benefice, London until September 2006. She is now Rector for the Church of England Team Ministry in Sutton.

Richard Turnor

Richard Turnor has been a partner at law firm Allen & Overy since 1985 where he advises professional firms and fund managers on structuring and constitutional issues. He is also a founder committee member and former chairman of the Association of Partnership Practitioners. After six years as vice chair at The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign, he became a director of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in 2009.
