Board and Management Executive

The Royal Marsden is managed by the Board of Directors made up of a chairman, chief executive, four other executive directors and six non-executive directors.

The day-to-day running of the hospital is carried out by the Management Executive made up of the five executive directors and the other members listed below.

Ian Molson became chairman in 2010. Ian also serves as chairman or director on the boards of a number of companies operating in the financial, industrial, healthcare and energy sectors. Ian is also Chairman of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

Cally Palmer CBE

Cally Palmer CBE, Chief Executive

Cally Palmer became Chief Executive of The Royal Marsden and a Trustee of the ICR in 1998. Cally was awarded a CBE in 2006 for her contribution to the NHS.

Dr Shelley Dolan

Shelley Dolan became Chief Nurse in 2007 following her position as the first UK Nurse Consultant in Cancer and Critical Care. Shelley has over 20 years' clinical experience working in intensive care.

Alan Goldsman

Alan Goldsman was appointed in 2002 from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust where he was Deputy Director of Finance. Alan has experience in the health, construction and commercial banking sectors.

Professor Martin Gore

Having trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Martin Gore joined The Royal Marsden in 1984. He is co-Patron of the Rarer Cancers Foundation and a Medical Advisor to the Kidney Cancer Association in the US.

Dr Liz Bishop

Liz Bishop joined The Royal Marsden in January 2010 as Divisional Nurse Director. Before taking on the role of Chief Operating Officer she also spent a period of time as Divisional Director for Cancer Services and as interim Chief Nurse. Liz completed her BSc in Nursing in Scotland in 1986, and her MSc and Doctorate at Surrey University in 2004 and 2009. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings – from surgery to haemato-oncology – in several acute trusts in London, including six years in The Royal Marsden's Bud Flanagan Unit. Prior to rejoining The Royal Marsden she was at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust for five years as a Nurse Consultant, Head of Nursing and then General Manager for Oncology.

Dame Nancy Hallett

Dame Nancy Hallett joined the Royal Marsden as a Non-Executive Director on 1 April 2013. She was Chief Executive of Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust until December 2012 and, prior to this, the Executive Director of Service Development and Executive Director of Nursing and Patient Services. Nancy undertook her Masters in Health Management at the City University in 1998. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2004 and Dame Commander of the order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2013.

Gregory Andrews, FCA

Greg Andrews became a Non-Executive Director in 2008 and is Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee. Greg's background is in financial services and he is Chief Executive of Christ's Hospital Foundation.

Professor Alan Ashworth, FRS

Alan Ashworth became a Non- Executive Director in January 2011. He is Chief Executive of the ICR, a Professor of Molecular Biology and a Fellow of The Royal Society.

Colin Clark

Colin Clark, Non-executive director

Colin Clark became a Non-Executive Director in May 2005. He has over 30 years' investment management experience with Mercury Asset Management, Merrill Lynch Investment Managers and is currently Executive Director of Standard Life Investments.

Sir John Craven

Sir John Craven became a Non- Executive Director in April 2008 following a distinguished career in banking, which culminated in membership of the Board of Managing Directors of the Deutsche Bank.

Richard Turnor

Richard Turnor became a Non- Executive Director in 2009. In the same year, Richard established Maurice Turnor Gardner LLP, an independent law firm from which he advises professional firms.
