Council of Governors
Members can become even more involved by standing for election as Governor and representing their fellow members' views on the Council of Governors.
Role of the Council of Governors
The Council of Governors plays a key role in the governance of The Royal Marsden. It meets four times a year and has the following key roles:
- Guardianship: ensuring that The Royal Marsden operates in a way that fits its statement of intent and complies with its terms of authorisation.
- Strategic: advising on the longer-term direction to assist the Board of Directors in developing strategy.
- Advisory: providing the Board and Management Executive with the views of patients, carers, members of public and other stakeholders to inform their planning and decision-making.
In addition, the Council of Governors has statutory duties in line with the constitution, including approving the appointment of the Chairman and Non-Executive Directors of the Board of Directors.
Elected Governors
Most Governors on the Council of Governors are elected by patient, carer and public members of the Trust. Four additional Governors are elected by staff.
The elected Governors:
- represent the interests of members
- influence decisions about spending and service developments
- appoint the Chair and the Non-Executive Directors of the Board of Directors.
Nominated Governors
A number of Governors are nominated by and represent the views of our stakeholders and partner organisations, including The Institute of Cancer Research, the two cancer networks and four primary care trusts we work with, primary care referrers and Cancer Research UK.
